Jesy and I went to see ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ today as our big event for the day. I’m not going to spoil much but I will say that if you haven’t already seen it, you shouldn’t pay the extra for 3D since the majority of the movie isn’t intended for 3D. There’s only a few fight scenes well into the movie that might look nice in 3D but really, you can do without.
The movie was a different take on Spider-Man. I don’t know. I liked that they modernized it quite a bit and they took a different approach to the story. Peter Parker is nothing like how he is in the comics or in previous movies. He’s more like Donnie Darko than anything out of a Marvel comic. He’s quirky, spazzy at times, but also charming when it comes to his relationship with Gwen Stacy. He’s not a goodie-goodie any more and it was nice to see this take on the character.
The downside to this is that it doesn’t feel like a Marvel movie. It felt like a generic sci-fi movie at times. While there were elements of the Spider-Man lore here, if you switched names out and you changed the costume, this could have been a generic sci-fi/super-hero movie. While it was good, it’s not epic. You never feel like you’re sharing the same universe with the Avengers, the Hulk or Captain America and the elimination of the J. Jonah Jameson/Daily Bugle storyline was criminal. I’m sure they can work that in in the sequel, but I was down that it wasn’t in the movie.
Emma Stone really steals every scene she’s in. I almost wished that she played another part so we could see more of her in a role such as the Catwoman-esque character “The Black Cat” in the future. It worked for Anne Hathaway in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and it would have worked for Emma as well in a future film. Sadly, Gwen’s future is dictated by the comics, and we’ll be robbed of that fun down the line.
Jesy enjoyed the movie, I liked it, but not as much as Batman, and the rest of the day was spent spoiling him at Target then making him a pizza and sleeping so I could work all night. I know it’s disappointing that the first half of the week I couldn’t get away from work (literally), but he says he’s having a good time and that’s all that matters, right?
Oh well, back to work, short nap coming up then another long day ahead of us.
