Okay, I officially have a new addiction. I got the Microsoft game “Freelancer” last night and had so much fun with it I wanted to play it before work this morning.
Freelancer is a space game much like the old Commodore 64 game “Elite.” You have a spaceship and a galaxy that’s pretty much wide open. While unfortunately, the economy isn’t dynamic like Elite’s was (with merchant prices changing in that game based on different factors), it’s still a blast to play and it’s probably as close to a star wars type dog fighting game we’re going to get for a while … wait, a GOOD star wars style dog fighting game. Sorry, Starfighter fans but that game sucks …
I’m still getting used to it though. Things like setting way points for your computer to follow back to a planet or station is new to me. I’m used to playing space games where you find a spot on a map and push your ship to that spot. Well, in this game, if you do that, you can be dead. I swear I felt like Han Solo for a minute when I forgot to set safe way points and ran headfirst into a debris field of metal around a planet. I was looking for the asteroid with the space slug in it to hide out in and get called a dumbass.
Didn’t dream of it yet. I’m going to play it a bit later tonight, but I’m warning ya, I know I’m addicted and I’m not giving this one up for a while. It’s stress relieving. Unlike that bloody SimGolf … razzlefrazzle.
