In a blow to Karen Read’s defense, it was revealed at a pre-trial motion hearing for the accused murderer on Wednesday that neither Brian Albert nor Brian Higgins, two potential witnesses in the trial, were targets of a Federal Investigation in the murder prosecution.
The revelations came as attorneys for Karen Read attempted to obtain phone records of conversations between the two men. Read’s attorneys say that it was revealed in the Federal investigation that the two called each other for 17-20 seconds in the hours after John O’Keefe went missing following Read’s story of dropping O’Keefe off at Albert’s house.
Attorneys for both Albert and Higgins revealed that they were given permission by Federal agents to reveal that both men and Albert’s wife and children, were not targets of the federal investigation into the case as they expressed their opinions to the Judge about the pending motions.
The defense in the case is seeking the phone records of calls between the men from the dates immediately following the death of O’Keefe. The theory floated by the defense was that O’Keefe was dropped off at Albert’s house for an after party then murdered by Albert and others then dumped in Albert’s front yard during a snowstorm.
Brian Albert then allegedly conspired with his brother Kevin and Higgins to bring law enforcement into a massive coverup of the crime, involving over 40 potential members of the law enforcement community.
The prosecution counters that Read simply backed into O’Keefe as she attempted to leave Albert’s driveway while having a blood alcohol level of over twice the legal limit then drove home, inadvertently leaving her boyfriend for dead.
Wednesday’s revelations make the defense’s theory less plausible as Brian Albert is their key figure in the conspiracy theory and was not the target of the federal investigation into the murder.
The next pre-trial hearing in the Karen Read murder case is on February 26, 2024 at 9AM local time.
