Confusion and chaos dominated the response by friends and family of Jose “Chille” DeCastro in the hours that followed Judge Michelle Leavitt’s decision to cancel his Wednesday bond hearing on Tuesday.
Hours after the decision was widely reported throughout the First Amendment auditing community, DeCastro’s own YouTube community page put up a statement directing his fans to his GoFundMe pages in preparation for Wenday’s hearing.
Despite protests from those who knew that the hearing was cancelled, DeCastro’s fans and page administrators refused to accept the reality of the hearing being cancelled and the distinct possibility that DeCastro will remain in jail for his entire term after being found guilty of obstructing a police officer and interfering in a traffic stop.
Brian “Here’s the Deal” Young would eventually go live on DeCastro’s YouTube channel, appearing visibly shaken and in shock at the news of his friend’s bond hearing denial. Young took open callers from fans of DeCastro for the rest of the program with most of the callers outraged at the ruling while expressing hope that DeCastro would somehow find a way out of jail as he was an “innocent” man.
The response by the DeCastro team got even more bizarre as they released the scheduled pre-hearing recap video featuring the latest address from jail from the incarcerated YouTuber. In that video, DeCastro called himself an innocent man looking forward to his bond hearing and again directed his fans to his GoFundMe in anticipation of the costs of his appeal.
DeCastro called himself a “firecracker” and “go-getter” in the statement and expressed hope of receiving bond on Wednesday, announcing that he was now writing a manifesto to be released as a book in order to change the system.
Abandoning his previously positive outlook on his prison stay, DeCastro said that his life in jail “sucked” and blamed his incarceration on the Supreme Court’s 1978 Terry vs. Ohio ruling. He went on to claim that arresting officer Brandan Borque knew that he was a journalist and no threat to him, but savagely arrested him as he was a “threat to officer safety.”
DeCastro again cited a conspiracy by the Las Vegas Metro Police Department to arrange his incarceration as he claimed his activities were a threat to a corrupt system. The YouTuber described his February 14, 2024, arrest for obstruction as retaliation for his on-going efforts and urged his audience to speak out against the system.
In another strange move, DeCastro attacked former partner Collin “Project Constitution” Campbell’s fundraising efforts on the *spotfund crowdfunding service. The incarcerated YouTuber begged doner Sean Rittenhouse, who is listed as making an offline donation of $4,135 to Campbell’s campaign, to retract the donation as DeCastro claimed it was made under fraudulent circumstances.
He went on to ask his fans to report the *spotfund campaign to police for impersonation.
Campbell responded by making the following statement to YouTube on his X (formerly Twitter) account:
@TeamYouTube Jose DeCastro again made another video harassing me in violation of my Protection Order by showing my fundraiser and saying it is fraudulent, directing all his supporters to MASS REPORT my fundraiser as well as saying the full names of the people who donated to my fundraiser and telling them to get a refund. Minf you he is doing all of this from JAIL>> PLEASE STOP HIM!! This is a huge violation of not only the law but your own guidelines for using your platform to commit criminal activity as well as harassment. This is about the 10th video he has made harassing me on his youtube channel using your platform in violation of my Protection order and he has yet to face any consequences. not even a suspension. How is that??? Ive had at least 4 of his videos removed by you for privacy violations yet he hasn’t ever been suspended and his channelo is still monetized and in good standing. PLEASE STOP HIM!!!! Do The Right Thing….. timestamps of the violation are 4:20-5:20 attached is a copy of my PPO that clearly says he shall harass me by interactive computer media (YOUTUBE)
DeCastro is set to face multiple misdemeanor charges for alleged criminal harassment against Campbell on April 25, 2024.
