Tuesday’s jailing of Jose “Chile” DeCastro for obstructing a police officer and interfering in a traffic sent shockwaves throughout the First Amendment auditing community.
DeCastro, by his own declaration, considered himself the “alpha” auditor and the owner of the most popular auditing channel on YouTube. While his metrics have always been questionable at best, with his interaction percentages and attendance figures showing that he cannot attract even 1% of his subscribers to his live daily infomercials, our own internal metrics at this publication indicate that DeCastro is the one subject people are drawn to more than anything else.
His outrageous behavior, the sheer slog of his two-to-five-hour daily infomercials and DeCastro’s inability to read the room and realize that his behavior is abnormal and even criminal brought in viewers. While easily mocked, there were also those who tuned into DeCastro’s broadcasts who legitimately relied on his services and who will be greatly impacted by his incarceration.
Press with Rancor
Garrett “Press with Rancor” Van Nett is a sad case. Unable to find legal representation on his own, he desperately turned to DeCastro to find a lawyer for his upcoming trial for felony obstruction of a traffic stop in Michigan.
DeCastro entered into a $60,000.00 agreement with an attorney out of Detroit in order to represent Van Nett. While DeCastro has paid $18,000.00 towards Van Nett’s legal services, his incarceration leaves him without the ability to pay the remaining $42,000.00, putting Van Nett’s legal representation in question.
Van Nett was also directly relying on DeCastro to help him engage with locals in his community and lead a campaign against the city attorney to have his charges dropped. Without DeCastro’s presence, it seems, Van Nett has lost everything and will be more than likely unable to successfully defend himself against the charges he faces.
Craig Hendry
Unlike others on this list, Hendry seemed to know that his time with DeCastro was a fluke. He was amazed by DeCastro’s ability to raise funds from his audience and was able to have DeCastro pay for the services of Larry “The DUI Guy” Foreman for one of his many court cases.
Alas, Hendry picked up more charges over the weekend and is having his bail revoked for stalking and harassing in an Indiana based case. While Hendry can rely on a public defender, the extra cash provided by DeCastro seemed to revitalize the YouTuber as he was able to hire a “legitimate” attorney and proceed with new hope.
Wanda Mise
DeCastro had literally just signed a contract purchasing services for the legal defense of controversial YouTuber Wanda Mise. On Monday, DeCastro announced that he had paid the first $3,000.00 out of a $6,000.00 agreement he had with an attorney to defend Mise in Wednesday’s bond revocation hearing.
Since the contract was in DeCastro’s name, it is unclear how Mise will pay the second $3,000.00 in the 45-day period or what the status of his legal services are now that DeCastro has been jailed as he goes into his hearing.
Jason Dollarhide
Since being jailed in Oklahoma last July, Dollarhide has relied on DeCastro to fund his commissary and phone privileges. Dollarhide has openly thanked DeCastro as the only person who seems to care about his well-being and only person who would contribute to his prison funding.
It is unclear whether Dollarhide has been informed of DeCastro’s incarceration and if a plan was put in place to continue DeCastro’s funding of Dollarhide’s needs during the time he’s away.
“Da Paper”
As stated before, Jose DeCastro is the most popular subject on the site you’re reading. A DeCastro related article does 2-3 times the daily viewership of any other subject on the site. Losing him as a source of content is going to hurt, though won’t be fatal to our on-going efforts.
We obviously weren’t prepared for DeCastro to be sentenced to jail for literally half a year. But as we’ve weathered his previous absences due to YouTube suspensions, travel, and personal issues preventing him from streaming for weeks at a time, we’ll do our best to provide you with the news coverage you’ve been expecting during his absence.
DeCastro still has several on-going court cases, and he is expected to attempt to appeal his current jail sentence. While our focus may turn to others, (Turtleboy, Regan Benson, Long Island Audits), our commitment to reporting the news has not changed and we’ll continue to put the news out every morning without fail.
Announcements on future plans and thanks coming soon. Stay tuned.
