Jose “Chille” DeCastro returned to live streaming in order to take what some call a well-deserved victory lap after helping raise $1000 for hotel fees and bond for YouTuber Jeremiah Payne and his wife Samantha.
The Payne family’s situation played out Friday night as they went live in order to crowd source for money to pay for two more days in the hotel that they had been staying at since October of 2022. Samantha was set to start a job at a local Family Dollar on Monday and the pair claimed they were prepared to pack their things up and live in the woods if they could not raise the money.
While they were successful in their goal of raising money for the room from their audience members, Jeremiah Payne was tricked into giving out his room number by someone who had offered to pay for the room. That person then called authorities in Kentucky to report the Payne’s location as both had outstanding warrants. Kentucky authorities contacted Tennessee authorities with an extradition notice for the pair and police from Tennessee arrived at the hotel a few minutes later to carry out arrest warrants.
This played out on a live stream (which is currently still live at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_L_mBGOUECY) with the police giving the couple the opportunity to get their things together and find someone to take care of their daughter before taking them into custody.
The pair reached out to several YouTube channels before Jose “Chille” DeCastro took up their cause. DeCastro went live Friday night and set a $1000 goal for his fund raising, with $750 going towards Samantha’s bond in Kentucky (Jeremiah’s bond was not set as of press time), and the rest going towards extending their hotel stay.
DeCastro’s efforts, while seen by many as valiant at the time, was based on the belief that the process would be carried out quickly with Samantha would be able to return to the hotel on Monday. As events played out on Saturday, it seems that there was no dire need for the fund raising as the pair are being held as fugitives from justice and their extradition hearing is currently not scheduled until late May. They do not have bond in Tennessee and Samantha’s bond only applies when she is extradited to Kentucky.
Addressing this on his live stream, DeCastro began a search for someone who would be able to retrieve the couple’s possessions (with permission from Jeremiah Payne’s mother) with the stated intent to store those belongings in a nearby storage unit. He is still seeking someone to do this as no candidates emerged during the broadcast.
DeCastro also expressed frustration with the process of fund raising for the couple, while praising his own efforts and taking shots at critics who did not believe he could act so selflessly. He stated that future fundraising efforts would be under his control and that he would no longer be sending his viewers to donate to cashapp and PayPal accounts that he could not control.
Continuing to address these concerns, DeCastro stated that he had filed to form a 501(C)3 non-profit organization and should be able to give receipts from the non-profit once established. While this process can take years to be approved, DeCastro seemed confident in his ability to have the organization in place quickly.
