Auditors Denver Metro Audits (DMA) and Sweet Tea were arrested before the bi-weekly Sheridan City Council Meeting for what was described as outstanding warrants.
According to an account provided by auditor Regan Benson on her live stream, her group of protestors arrived at the Sheridan, Colorado, City Hall about an hour before the scheduled council meeting. Her group was then allegedly confronted by a group of supporters for the Sheridan police department, who managed to get into the meeting room and sign up for the vast majority of speaking spots for the public feedback portion of the meeting.
Sweet T and DMA were then arrested outside of the meeting room by a number of Sheridan police officers. The police would only state that they were being taken into custody for “outstanding warrants” and that an explanation would be forthcoming.
Benson and others from the protest group turned their attention back to the city council meeting, which started a few minutes later. The Mayor reportedly decided to limit the public feedback time to 15 minutes, which brought an objection from the city attorney, who made it clear that the action was something that needed a discussion by the council and a vote. Ultimately, the city council voted to eliminate the public feedback portion of the meeting, resulting in the vast majority of the protestors leaving the building.
While most of the protesters went home, Benson went to the Arapahoe County Jail to see about bond for Sweet T and DMA. They encountered some difficulty in finding the pair in the system as the booking process was not completed. A furious Benson demanded a manager in order update the situation. After being assured that both auditors were safe and going through the booking process, both were found in the system and Benson was able to post $2,000 in bond for Sweet T and $1000 in bond for DMA.
Ultimately, DMA (Chris Cordova) was charged with obstruction of officers and Sweet T (Teresa Neal) was charged with third degree assault. DMA has a follow up court date later this week, while Sweet T reportedly has court on the 27th.
The pair were released a little after 11PM local time; they joyously reunited with Benson and bragged that the night’s actions will be added to their civil case against the city of Sheridan.
