Welcome to ReallyCoolNews!
“This was always supposed to be a temporary thing.” I say that to myself every morning when I wake up before 6AM and begin to put out a new issue of the news.
My near-hourly news reports in Kate Peter’s Discord server at the height of the Jose “Chille” DeCastro controversy back in the fall needed a permanent home and I’ve always had more to say about subjects that can be contained in Discord’s 2000 character limit as frankly, there are stories that can’t be effectively communicated by breaking them down into a 300 character blurb.
I’ve had this site since 2001, it started as a personal blog which turned into nearly daily comic strips poking fun at the TechTV news channel (go read them, they’re pretty good). “ReallyCoolSite” was picked as a domain name without much thought, I needed something generic but effective as I thought the content of the site would drive people here, rather than the name. The .org came because .com is still not available. The owners have graciously offered to sell it to me for thousands of dollars and I’ve never had those thousands of dollars to give them.
With the old rules of .orgs, it essentially called for a non-profit site. That was fine as I’m admittedly not good at selling myself or my work. Having an .org rather than a .com doesn’t mean much to most people, but to me, it put me in a position where I could just have a web site and not worry about Google Ads, popups, spyware, or, you know, actually having to put out regular content because people were paying me for it… “Oh thank goodness,” I thought, “stick with the .org.”
When the daily auditing news stories needed a home, I went with a generic, yet sarcastic, title. “Auditing Insanity” was a play on all of the First Amendment (1A) auditors who always start their nickname with “Auditing.” Auditing America. Auditing the USA. Long Island Audits. Great Leaks Audits. Son of the Audit that Ate Cleveland. Their actions, which some would consider stupid and insane at times, was ripe for parody. Plus, I needed SOMETHING to call us for that first issue, and sarcasm fit.
Alas, it’s almost 3 months later and I need something to explain what I’ve been doing to and to put on the resume in my attempts to get back into the work force. “Auditing Insanity” raises too many questions on a resume. “You did what now? You’re talking about who? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?” And thus, REALLYCOOLNEWS was born. It’s that simple. I’ve changed the name. I’ll probably still break into the royal “we” and do everything else the same but I need a job and ReallyCoolNews sounds a lot better to a recruiter.
Thank you for your patronage to whatever the heck we’re calling ourselves these days. If you feel like it, please feel free to throw a couple of bucks at our paypal (as again, I SUCK AT MONETIZING MY WORK and have yearly site renewal coming up). I promise to keep up the hard work and bring you the same sort of coverage on a daily basis.
