Blogger turned human rights activist Aidan “Turtleboy” Kearney (Turtleboy) was released on his own recognizance on Friday following a bail hearing and arraignment on new charges filed against him Thursday night.
Turtleboy’s hearing was notable for the absence of special prosecutor Ken Mello, who had been recently hospitalized with an unknown aliment. His substitute seemed ill-prepared for the case which may have contributed to the outcome of the hearing.
After an arraignment for new charges of witness intimidation and wiretapping, Turtleboy was almost immediately released on his own recognizance as the substitute prosecutor put up no objection to his release.
Turtleboy was immediately released from jail and briefly addressed the estimated 30 supporters who awaited him outside the courthouse. He later released a Facebook livestream again addressing his fans and promising changes now that he had been released from jail.
Due to special prosecutor Mello’s illness, Monday’s hearing in Turtleboy’s on-going criminal cases has been rescheduled to April 23, 2024.
