[Please note: This is the first version of what would become the Ring Report TV update. I wrote it as a kid on an old fashioned typewriter in the 1980s. Presented “as is” in original format. There was no internet, I couldn’t spell, so please be kind.]
Wrestling Update 7/8/86
AWA
- Sherri Martel won the singles Ladies championship from Candi Divine when she used the ropes to pin Divine. Buddy Rose was at ringside in Martel’s corner.
- Nick Bockwinkle was awarded the AWA Championship when Stan Hansen failed to show up for a title defense with Bockwinkle in Denver.
Hansen was reported in the building before the match and was seen by AWA officials. Stanley Blackborne, the AWA president, gave Hansen a time limit to show up, Hansen never showed, and the title was handed to Bockwinkle. - Hansen also took the old AWA belt (the actual title belt) so a new belt had to be made.
- Announcer Larry nelson is promoting “Earthquake” Ferris as an “up and coming young rookie who the crowd is going wild for.” What I saw was an overweight jerk who the crowd was booing — and I thought Vince McMahon was a liar . . .
- AWA Match of the week: Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannette (aka the Midnight Rockers) vs. Madd Maxx and Super Maxx (aka the Maxx Brothers). The Rockers are rip-offs of the Rock and Roll Express and the Maxx Brothers are rip-offs of the Road Warriors. It turned out to be a fine match. With the rockers winning when Madd Maxx tossed Jennette over the top rope.
Update 7/9/86
UWF
- Freebird Michael Hayes is calling himself “P.S.” Hayes, after the steamy post script line that Dark Journey supposedly wrote to him.
Ted DiBiase countered the “P.S.” by saying that it stood for “Prissy Sissy.” The fans now shout “Prissy Sissy” whenever Hayes appears at the ring or in interviews. - Korchinko and Lady Maxine have been run out of the UWF by “Cowboy” bill Watts and his friends (too many to mention).
- Blade Runner Rock has been put out of wrestling with an unspecified injury. Which leaves Eddie Gilbert with Blade Runner Sting as the only wrestler in his stable.
- Terry Gordy was defending his UWF title against Steve Williams when Michael Hayes and Bill Watts battled outside the ring. The battle continued inside the ring, and the referee was knocked out. Both Gordy and Williams were disqualified for outside interference.
The referee, Tommy Gilbert, had to be carried out on a stretcher. He seemed okay in later bouts. - Blade Runner Sting took on Bill Watts with the stipulation that if Watts won he got 10 minutes with Eddie Gilbert. Watts won, and his 10 minutes with Gilbert was interrupted when all three Freebirds jumped into the ring and attacked Watts. Terry Gordy put the “Oriental Spike” pressure point hold on Watts, and Watts was left unconscious, bleeding, and looking stupid.
- Jack Victory took on the Missing Link, who is managed by Dark Journey, in the final bout. The Link showed off his weird style and beat Jack Victory by pinfall when Victory tried to headbutt the Link. Journey then came into the ring and started kicking Victory. Victory started yelling “With one phone call I can get my revenge.”
WWF on TNT
- Jim Niedhart got a second chance on The Mating Game — he ended up with a date with the Fabulous Moolah.
World Class Area (on ESPN)
WCCW
- Chris Adams is back teaming with the Von Erichs, he is still wearing an eye patch over his left eye.
- The Assassin (I couldn’t tell if he is the same one from Northwest wrestling and he called himself “Mr. Wrestling” the first time I saw him), is in the are, he took on Mark Youngblood — who was also making his first appearance. The Assassin lost (of course).
- Buzz Sawyer is in the World Class Area.
- The Raven is a new valet battling Sunshine in the World Class Area, neither appeared on the show, but I hear they will be in a series of mud wrestling matches over the next few weeks that might be televised.
- Kerry Von Erich suffered a broken leg in a motorcycle accident and should be out 1 to 3 months.
- None of the Von Erichs appeared on the World Class show, but Mike Von Erich has made an active return to wrestling.
- Bruiser Brody and Blackjack Mulligan have been feuding in the area. Surprisingly, Mulligan is the bad guy and Brody is the good guy. Mulligan is managed by Percy Pringle, and is teaming with Rick Rude in tag team matches.
- Kabuki has been released from Percy Pringle’s management and will be going up against Pringle’s newest client, Abdullah the butcher, for the Brass Knuckles Championship of Texas.
- The “USA Express” — identical twins Bob and Brad Batten are raising a following in Texas. They wear trunks and have the style of the Fabulous Ones, and the name of the old USA Express — Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo.
- In the feature bout, Chris Adams won by Disqualification over Rick Rude in a non-title bout.
Wrestling Report 7/12/86
WWF
- The “American Express”, Mike Rotundo and Danny Spivey look like they won’t muster the fame or the following the the “USA Express” (Windham & Rotundo), had when they held the tag-team world belts.
- Junkyard Dog is getting really out of shape.
- Paul Orndorff and Hulk Hogan took on the Moondogs in action. It looked like Orndorff and Hogan were identical ego maniacs, they used the same tactics. Orndorff and Hogan didn’t tag in when their partners needed help. Hogan was in the match for 30 seconds, he tagged out, and Orndorff took on the Moondogs by himself. Not giving Hogan the chance to tag in. Orndorff is really going downhill, he looks great, but his Hulk Hogan style is going to bring him battling the Hulk over fans in the near future.
- Ricky Steamboat is still bringing his “dragon” into the ring with him.
NWA
- Big Bubba attacked the Warlord when Jim Cornette called Babby Doll into the ring on television. Baby Doll brought the Warlord as her defense — and Bubba attacked the Warlord when he was entering the ring. Bubba clotheslined the Warlord, then proceeded to pound him. dusty Rhodes had to run into the ring to save the Warlord and Baby Doll.
- Jim Cornette is turning into a good broadcaster — even if he is a spineless asshole.
- Ric Flair has survived 7 of the 14 title defenses of the Great American Bash, I’d like to see Hulk Hogan try the same thing (14 defenses in 30 days).
- Magnum T.A. is down 1 to nothing in his best of 7 series for the US title against Niketa Koloff.
- Shaska got his head shaved in a hair vs. hair match against Jimmy Valiant. He’s now called a “balk headed geek.” A follow up match has been signed putting Paul Jones’ hair up against Valiant’s hair. Shaska has perfected a nice superplex off the middle rope.
- Ronnie Garvin took on Black Bart in a non-title match and had to use the ropes to pin Bart. JJ Dillion and Tully Blanchard were at ringside and protested the decision to no response.
- The tag team title was on the line when the Road Warriors took on the Midnight Express. The match was typically a Road Warriors match, with the Express being beat up, and only surviving when Cornette used the tennis racket on Animal in front of the referee.
After the match Paul Ellering chased Cornette around the ring — Cornette ran to Bubba and Ellering ran into the ring — Baby Doll appeared from nowhere and decked Cornette. The Express had to carry Cornette from ringside.
Wrestling Update 7/14/86
UWF
- Bill Watts is still injured from last weeks’ attack from the Freebirds.
- Michael Hayes now claims that “P.S.” means “Pure and Sexy” but everyone in the audience called him “prissy sissy” and he went crazy. He called Ted DiBiase out to come and fight over the meaning of the name. Ted came, followed in the ring by Freebird buddy Roberts. Roberts and Hayes double teamed DiBiase until Terry Taylor ran in. He was followed by Freebird Terry Gordy who opened up a cut on Taylor’s head. Hacksaw Duggan came in and all hell broke loose.
- Eddie Gilbert got a gift from the Freebirds last week when they beat up bill Watts. Watts’ belt was the prize — and Gilbert is happy to have it.
- Kamala, managed by Skandar Ackbar, took on the Missing Link in a normal match. The match was all Kamala then all the Link — when all of a sudden Jack victory, Hollywood John Tatum and Missy Hyatt ran in and attacked the Link and Dark Journey. Journey was left unconscious and the Link was left jumping up and down in the ring.
- In the interview that followed, Tatum and victory claimed to be surfers and Hyatt demanded a brush.
- Terry Taylor and Hacksaw Duggan were scheduled to take on Freebirds Terry Gordy and Buddy Roberts in a tag team match. but Ted DiBiase and Michael Hayes came out and started the battle as a six man match — the referee made a special decision to change the match to a 6 man match, and the war began. It was a bloody brawl for two minutes until the show was over.
