This site began nearly 20 years ago (in June of 2021) with a blog and a comic strip pretty much devoted to a Television network named TechTV. Back then I was working for AOL and had a lot of free time on my hands. TechTV launched as a live technology-based version of CNN with “TechLive” being a news show starting early every morning and going to mid-afternoon.
TechLive was notorious for having a chat desk and chat room where geeks could go and give feedback to segments and ask questions for the hosts to ask on air. Alas, since the hosts of the room were usually very pretty girls, the guys in the room weren’t great at asking questions. If you remember a lot of questions each segment attributed to “James,” that was usually me coming up with 2 or 3 good questions so the chat girls had something to ask when their segments were featured.
Since I wasn’t one of those who were actively hitting on the hosts, and was a great help by providing questions, I developed friendships with the chat hosts that carried on for years after they phased out the chat desk. “One Day at TechTV” was a way to make those chat hosts laugh and became my little way to give feedback to happenings on air, while still being a funny digital comic strip.
It’s been down for over a decade for a lot of reasons. A falling out one of them. I felt for a long time that the works were better left in the past. I moved on with ReallyCoolComics and the 5 or 6 series that aren’t up for another reason or two (though Retro Retro Retro is still going!), and for years One Day at TechTV was my lost baby. The plans to turn it into a comic never materialized. It wouldn’t work. The strip was so weird and unique that it only works how it is.
As we approach the 20th anniversary of the site and the digital strip, a good friend convinced me it was okay to bring them back in PDF format. The folks in the strip are public figures, this is parody and labeled as such and the few screen shots here and there of other properties are well within fair use guidelines. Reallycoolsite is also an .ORG. It means we don’t advertise or sell stuff right now. We do ask for donations, but those are to keep the site running.
That said… 20 years was a long time ago. My humor has changed. There may be things in the comics that I may not be proud of but am offering “warts and all” to preserve the content. I am not going crazy promoting it, though we’re adding things like galleries of the screen shots we have (sadly, I don’t have a lot of videos left to share of the channel), and are planning on keeping things around.
So please enjoy my work. There’s 30 seasons of the comic strip and we’ll be putting them up as I have time. Please let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to see with the content I have on file.
Best,
Jim
