Auditor David “Riverside County Accountability” Chavez will remain in jail until at least March 1, 2024, after a California Superior Court Judge determined he and six of the seven members of the so-called “Justice 8” group will remain in jail on Friday.
The San Bernardino Sun reported that Judge John Wilkerson could not find a way to adequately protect the public from the defendants and guarantee their appearance at trial if released.
Chavez is being held due to his alleged participation in protests held by “Justice 8” leader Edin Alex Enamorado last year that turned violent.
Police are concerned that Enamorado has demonstrated that he has the ability to use social media to gather large groups of followers in order to allegedly harass and intimidate targets he claims abused San Bernardino area street vendors.
The Justice 8 group has also allegedly targeted police at previous gatherings. One such gathering allegedly organized by Enamorado was held last year outside of the home of a police deputy who allegedly body slammed a 16-year-old girl who was allegedly reaching for his pepper spray during an altercation.
Chavez and six other members of the group have been in jail since December 15, 2023, when pre-dawn raids apprehended the group. After multiple hearings, there has still been no headway on the issue of bond.
The next hearing in their case is scheduled for March 1, 2024.
