NEWS BITS
The WCW confused fans in the Atlanta area this week by promoting tonight’s Omni card and announcing that RICK RUDE would defend his NWA World Title in the main event. This, of course, flies in the face of the current WCW Continuity that promotes RIC FLAIR as the NWA Champion, and comes just days before Flair is scheduled to appear with the belt on the CLASH OF CHAMPIONS live card.
In related news, the WCW announced that RIC FLAIR & STING would face THE COLOSSAL KONGS at the CLASH while running commercials stating that it would be Sting alone against one of the Kongs. In fact, the WCW ran the incidents leading up to Flair & Sting teaming on it’s syndicated shows long before it actually ran the incidents taking place in the “first run” WCW Saturday Night this week.
Not to be outdone, the WWF had it’s own continuity gaffs this week as GORILLA MONSOON & JIM ROSS babbled about THE HEAD SHRINKERS facing THE STEINERS for the WWF tag titles at SUMMERSLAM while everyone else in the WWF was babbling about the Steiners facing THE HEAVENLY BODIES. Meanwhile, everyone was talking about JIM DUGAN facing YOKOZUNA for the WWF title at the SUMMERSLAM SPECIAL on the USA CHANNEL, actual commercials for the event bill Yokozuna facing TATANKA in a title defense.
Though both federations rely on advanced tapings in order to keep up with production schedules and continuity gaffs are nothing new, this is the first time in recent memory that both federations have had major blunders like this in the same week. To quote one fan: “It didn’t happen unless it was announced on TV, maybe.”
IN WCW SHORT NEWS: The turning of ERIK WATTS continued this week as he gave former tag team partner FRANK LANCASTER a low blow then applied his submission maneuver in their match on WCW World Wide Wrestling . . . HOT TOPICS by LORNE WHITE
It seems HAWK may not make the Clash due to OLE ANDERSON’S failure to give him a contract. The angle CAN still be played if they pretend a behind the scenes angle like “Hawk was injured by the NASTY BOYS before the show — will these men stop at nothing???” Or something along those lines. . . BRIAN PILLMAN’S injury may keep him from being in the Clash as expected. Problems will probably spring off from this due to the months in advanced tapings in Orlando. I expect Pillman to be at ringside but get “injured” early in the match so things can go as expected on the NASTY BOYS can play a role in “injuring” him . . . Rumors are flying around that RIC FLAIR & RICKY STEAMBOAT may retire soon . . . Speaking of Flair, Flair & STING will be involved in a major angle coming up soon. It will involve all of the Horsemen . . . Soon “The Mother of all matches” or so it’s being called will take place at the Memphis Coliseum pitting JERRY LAWLER & JEFF JARRETT vs. BRET & OWEN HART. This may end that feud . . . The BRIAN CHRISTOPHER/CHRIS ADAMS feud is still going. TONI ADAMS who is pretending to be NANNY SIMPSON is still with Brian even though he’s been publicly abusive towards her in public. Toni Adams plays Miss Simpson in the USWA but portrays herself in the GWF . . . LUDVIG BORGA will be the next WWF’er to receive the BIG push . . . This week a LOT of WWF’ers will be released, some will stay affiliated with the Whiff wrestling on undercards and as fill ins when needed, some will return to action as soon as they’re needed and the others will move on to other ground such as TERRY TAYLOR & TYPHOON . . . Typhoon may fill in as DUSTIN RHODES’ partner at the Clash. He and Rhodes had very violent feuds will each other as well as Dusty during the ’80s in Florida. FRED OTTOMAN & DUSTY RHODES remain close friends today . . . and Dustin was recently married to ALEXANDRA YORK in Atlanta . . .
NOTES FROM THE MAD DOG
Minor notes this week as Lorne is recovering from a mystery illness and I’m still cleaning up from my parents’ Anniversary party last week (I’m still finding paper plates that my young cousins left hidden under beds, behind chairs, etc.). ::Sigh:: And then you have the current state of wrestling . . . I think I’m going back to bed for quite a long time . . .
HAVE A GREAT WEEK,
MADDOGJMF
