The Ring Report TV UPDATE Vol. 1. No 1 3/7/93
(a Pro Wrestling Update for people with lives)
WCW POWER HOUR
The push of Eric Bishov began this morning with his debut as the host of the Power hour, replacing Tony Schivante, who has moved on to host WCW Saturday Night. In his first hour of hosting, Eric seemed a little off-pace, and certainly offered nothing more than the usual “golly, gee this is so fun!” attitude that he displayed as the host of the WCW upcoming events segment.
WHAT YOU MISSED: THE WRECKING CREW managed to defeat JOE CRUZ and BRAD ANDERSON with their “wrecking ball” maneuver . . . VAN HAMMER destroyed FRED “THE HARIEST MAN IN WCW” AVERY . . . A recap of the TV title matches from last week (JOHNNY B. BADD defeating CHRIS BENOIT and CACTUS JACK defeating TOM ZENK) . . . BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: STING’s theme song defeated RICK RUDE’s theme song in the finals of that wonderful SLAM JAM 1 competition . . . The hour rapped up with a dynamite non-title match putting RICKY STEAMBOAT & SHANE DOUGLAS vs. BRIAN PILLMAN & STEVE AUSTIN . . . the champs avenged their non-title loss last week when Douglas pinned Austin after a four-man brawl.
WWF MANIA
Why is this show still on the air? I’d pay GIANT GONZLAS anything to squash host TODD PETTINGIL! This show offered the typical replay of WWF action from other shows last week. In skits you missed Pettingil arriving late for work, getting locked out of the building, and then visiting the WWF’s main headquarters where he used the bathroom. “CLASSY” FREDDIE BLASSIE managed to save the show with a quick interview, but, other than that, you were lucky to miss this one.
WHAT YOU MISSED: PAPA SHANGO finally aimed right and hit someone in the face with his “spark stick” before losing the match by DQ, this week it was TYPHOON (who looked really bad) . . . A replay of the MONEY INC. interview featuring the acceptance of the WWF TITLE DEFENSE against HULK HOGAN and BRUTIS BEEFCAKE (now managed by JIMMY HART) at WRESTLEMANIA 9 . . . KIM CHEE wrestled a preliminary (more commonly known as a “match vs. a jobber”) match . . . Finally, another replay, DOINK losing by DQ to THE BIG BOSSMAN after throwing green stuff in the Bossman’s face.
WCW SATURDAY NIGHT
Another sign of the new WCW as the old studio-oriented Saturday Night seems to have been dropped in favor of the generic WCW arena taping. This was a fast-paced show featuring commentary by Tony Schivante and color commentary by Jessie “the body” Ventura. Ric Flair, Dustin Rhodes, Rick Rude, and STING took center stage with interviews.
WHAT YOU MISSED: MARCUS ALEXANDER BAGWELL & TOO COLD SCORPIO defeated BOB COOK & BUDDY LEE PARKER; the crowd went crazy whenever Scorpio entered the ring . . . DAVEY BOY SMITH pinned THE MASKED WRECKER after a power slam . . . Schivante interviewed MISSY HYATT, who stated that she wanted to talk to Flair and that she was out to take any one of the “bevy of big, beautiful, and dumb” guys in WCW under her guidance . . . GREAT MATCH: VINNIE VEGAS & BIG SKY battled RICKY STEAMBOAT & SHANE DOUGLAS for 15 minutes before STEVE AUSTIN & BRIAN PILLMAN crashed the ring . . . THE WRECKING CREW defeated two prelims then called out THE COLE TWINS. GRIZZLY SMITH came out to stop things when the Cole Twins ran into the ring, were immediately granted 5 minutes of air time, and ended up pinning the Wrecking Crew for the second week in a row . . . In the RICK RUDE interview Rude looked healthy, he has the mustache again, and made it clear that he wants DUSTIN RHODES . . . Rhodes was later interviewed only to have PAUL ORNDORFF come out to challenge him. Dustin started a chant of “Paula” and left Orndorff jumping up and down in frustration . . . Ric Flair came out for an interview which saw Missy Hyatt again try to interrupt things (she was taken off by Flair’s security), then saw ARN ANDERSON get past the guards to do the four horsemen sign until the commercial break . . . the show ended with STING’s return to WCW and a short interview before TV time expired . . .
WWF SUPERSTARS
Offbeat show featuring the usual blah-blahs of Vince McMahon, Randy Savage, and Jerry “the King” Lawler. No update this week, and I noticed that Flair is finally missing from the opening credits. I had hoped that THE HEAD SHRINKERS would do something outrageous to get THE STEINER BROTHERS to come out, but it didn’t happen.
WHAT YOU MISSED: A segment featuring TATONKA’s non-title win over SHAWN MICHAELS last month and Tatonka’s pin of Michaels in a six-man match two weeks ago . . . No update, I wonder if that’s a new format? . . . “HACKSAW” JIM DUGAN apologized to America in a taped segment about Yokozuna’s attack, I doubt he’ll be back anytime soon . . . The Head shrinkers wrestled their typical match, during which AFA did an interview with subtitles (if only they were used years ago with the late, great, TOJO YAMAMOTTO) . . . Brett Hart did an interview where he said that Yokozuna will respect him after WMIX . . . THE MEGA-MANIACS accepted the challenge of MONEY INC. for the WMIX title match . . . BRUTIS BEEFCAKE’s new nickname seems to be “BIONIC” . . . RUMOR of a “BIG SURPRISE” from the Mega-Maniacs next week . . . GIANT GONZLAS and HARVEY WHIPPLEMAN interrupted the WMIX update with a challenge in the ring for THE UNDERTAKER; no response from the Undertaker . . .
WWF ALL AMERICAN WRESTLING
Ho-Hum, this show was taped in Philadelphia’s Liberty Square. During the hour BOBBY HEENAN noticed that the liberty bell has a crack in it and wondered out loud why it hasn’t been repaired after all these years . . .
WHAT YOU MISSED: The show opened with a recap of the Mega-Maniacs accepting the challenge of Money Inc. . . . another replay of the Superstars prelim match featuring the Steiners . . . TYPHOON wrestled TIM PATTERSON in an “exclusive” All American Wrestling match (oh joy) . . . replay of CRUSH’s interview in Hawaii about DOINK . . . a replay of THE NASTY BOYS & TOTANKA vs. SHAWN MICHAELS and THE BEVERLY BROTHERS from Monday Night Raw two weeks ago . . . Another showing of the JIM DUGAN segment . . . Yokozuna squashed a prelim . . . OWEN HART wrestled a singles match . . .
RUMORS FROM VARIOUS SOURCES
Titan sports apparently wants JIM ROSS, even thought he has expressed anti-WWF remarks over the past couple of months . . . KEVIN SULLIVAN found a way to have Smoky Mountain Wrestling billed for his psychiatric treatment; SMW Commissioner BOB ARMSTRONG is less than pleased with this situation . . . THE NIGHTSTALKER defeated TRACY SMOTHERS for the SMW TV TITLE, though word has it that TIM HORNER defeated him for that belt on a match set to air this week . . . WEIRD RUMOR: a source says that Brutis Beefcake will turn on Hulk Hogan at WMIX based on Jerry Lawler’s description of Brutis as the same type of “backstabber” as the famous Brutis who stabbed Caesar (Caesar’s Palace is the setting for WMIX . . .) . . . CONSISTENT WWF HOUSE CARD RESULTS: TITO SANTANNA defeats THE PREDATOR . . . CRUSH wins over MARTY JANETTE by DQ . . . THE BEVERLY BROTHERS fall to the Steiner Brothers . . . YOKOZUNA is DQ’d for throwing salt at the Undertaker after the Undertaker man-handles him . . . WARNING! WARNING! BRUCE “BROTHER LOVE” PRITCHARD has been spotted at the announcers tables at various WWF house shows! Could this be the second coming . . . ?
NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
My name is “Mad Dog” James M. Finch, and this is my first attempt at a Ring Report type update on on-line service. While the Ring Report is new to everyone out there, it actually has an 8 year history as an exclusive update of Pro Wrestling events to a friend in Seattle, so I’ve been doing this for several years. I am not however, above receiving criticism from readers in fact, I’m looking forward to seeing what you think. I do ask that you e-mail your thoughts to me instead of posting replies here because I probably won’t be back until next weekend and don’t really have a lot of time on-line to spend going though replies.
THE RING REPORT is officially looking for correspondents to fill the non-mainstream wrestling shows (SMW, IWCCW, USWA, etc.), and pay-per-view results (my backwater cable company doesn’t support pay-per-view services), again, if interested please e-mail me and we’ll work something out. I plan to post the Ring Report each Sunday night before 6 PM EST (depending on my schedule), and can almost always be found at around 8:30 PM EST each Sunday taking part in the RING THINGS weekly conference. If I remember, I’ll probably post this as a file called RRTV1.TXT (dos text) in the Ring Things library ASAP.
Until Next,
MADDOGJMF
NEXT WEEK: I’ll include results from MONDAY NIGHT RAW, WCW MAIN EVENT, and might have results from the JIM ROSS Radio show (depending on the weather) . . .
