BRAIN WAVES “Am I the brain? Or am I the Brain? I called this 5 minutes ago!”
— Bobby Heenan apparently commenting on recent WCW events during Monday Night Raw!
WRESTLING NEWS [Short News this week because I’m still in pain and trying to recover from the chicken pox.]
In an apparent surprise move, RAZOR RAMON defeated RICK “THE MODEL” MARTEL in the match to fill the WWF INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE last week on Monday Night RAW when he put the aging model in “the Razor’s Edge” to win the belt.
Bigger news happened this week behind the scenes as reports indicate that SHAWN MICHAELS has apparently come to terms with the WWF and may start wrestling for the WWF again as soon as early next month. Michaels had left the WWF last month after he allegedly failed a drug test and decided to contest the terms of his contract (“big names” just DON’T fail drug tests).
In WCW news, all the rumors indicate that SID VICIOUS will turn face before the HALLOWEEN HAVOC pay-per-view card next week. Most of the rumors revolve around the fact that COL. PARKER, Sid’s manager, will all but ignore promoting Sid’s match vs. Sting at the Havoc in order to promote his tag team of THE AWESOME KONGS and singles great STEVE AUSTIN.
Sid’s turn has reportedly been schedules as the WCW attempts to cover itself with a major impact face now that STING has made it clear that he won’t be around next year when his contract runs out. As always, look to the Ring Report for updates on these topics as they come in.

TODD CHAMPION returned to the area as a face this week . . . and TOO COLD SCORPIO & MARCUS ALEXANDER BAGWELL have received a title shot the night before their title shot with THE NASTY BOYS at Halloween Havoc next week . . .

HARVEY WHIPPLEMAN is now managing ADAM BOMB . . . and JEFF JARRETT’S first promo aired this week; he’s going to be an obnoxious country music singer somewhat similar to THE HONKY TONK MAN . . .

WCW SATURDAY NIGHT 10/16/93
WHAT YOU MISSED: JOHNNY B. BADD seemed to lose a match to PAUL ORNDORFF when Orndorff used the ropes to pin him; a second ref. came down and DQ’d Orndorff for this action, then Badd KO’d Orndorff with a knockout punch . . . Orndorff spent the rest of the two hours whining about it so they have a rematch scheduled for next week . . . TOO COLD SCORPIO & MARCUS ALEXANDER BAGWELL did an interview, watched the replay of their non-title upset of THE NASTY BOYS, wrestled some prelims, then fended off MISSY HYATT during an interview . . . if you can say those first three entries without taking a breath — you have my respect . . . a Halloween Havoc control center . . . RICK RUDE easily over TA MCKOY . . . more amateur challenge footage . . . THE NASTY BOYS defeated PEZ WHATLEY & SAM HOUSTON, called out TOO COLD SCORPIO & MARCUS ALEXANDER BAGWELL, then fled back to the dressing room as Bagwell counted Scorpio’s pin of BRIAN KNOBS . . . In an apparent WCW Flashback (the screen got all jiggly and the footage was OBVIOUSLY from earlier in the year), COL. NOTES FROM THE MAD DOG
Forgive me for a minute as I go into a WCW rant: 800 people arrived at the Omni for a recent card. Those numbers should send shivers down the backs of all the WCW fans out there as Atlanta’s Omni is the HEART of the WCW — the center of all power for Ted Turner’s forgotten organization.
When was the last time you heard of a house show by a major federation with a showing this bad? Even the WWF draws 1000 people to the upper northern regions of Canada whenever it hits town! Heck, a public flogging could probably draw 800 people who’d pay anywhere from $5 to $25 dollars to “get real close to see the blood fly!” But the WCW doesn’t seem to have that drawing power.
Kiss Sting good-bye, according to latest rumors — he’s the guy most WCW fans pay to see and his contract is up at the end of the year. Already people are saying that he’ll be in the WWF as the first big challenger to the scheduled Luger title reign. But Sting isn’t the only one: RIC FLAIR, RICK RUDE, & BIG VAN VADER are also subjects of recent rumors in the “soon to be gone” category.
If all four of these major powers go you can all-but kiss the WCW as we know it good-bye. Sure they’ll be a WCW program on every week, but it won’t be the same. The major powers will be elsewhere and we’ll be “treated” to more of the same — a dying federation that pre-tapes it’s events and can’t out-draw a public flogging.
And you want the scariest thing? WCW TV events have actually IMPROVED in the past few months, the HALLOWEEN HAVOC pay-per-view is actually a great card for once, GENE OCKERLAND is coming to fill out their much needed-interviewing role, and the talent base has been the best it’s been since 1989! BUT ONLY 800 PEOPLE PAY TO SEE THE CARD AT THE OMNI?!?!?
Sometimes having the best doesn’t work. And I’m ending the rant (notice the difference between a “rant” and an “editorial,” with a rant I provide no constructive criticism or structured arguments. It is me yelling at the world about something I care about but don’t know how to change.), so . . .
HAVE A GREAT WEEK,
MADDOGJMF & Company!
[If you’d care to comment or provide your own rant for next week’s Ring Report, please e-mail it to me by next Sunday night at 4 PM Eastern Time.]
