In a sure sign of a slow news day, Chille DeCastro’s most outrageous behavior of Wednesday, March 22, 2023 was to post a picture of a car featuring a Nevada “Friends of Las Vegas Metro PD” license plate and asking, “How come? Why?”
This was a follow up to his recent video questioning the plate and indicating that he believed that the vanity plates were a sort of “get out of ticket” free device used by police to allow their friends and family to get away with traffic infractions.
DeCastro famously raged against the plates after his recent arrest for resisting and obstructing an officer in Las Vegas by Las Vegas Metro Police. With charges still in the hands of the district attorney and facing the possibility of 6 months in jail and fines up to $1,000.00 per charge if convicted, DeCastro has been expressing his anger in a series of YouTube videos.
As with most of DeCastro’s claims, however, a simple Google search turned up the truth about his claims of a vast government conspiracy in order to oppress those opposed to an all-powerful police state. The charitable license plates, one style out of about two dozen different styles, were introduced by the Nevada DMV in September of 2021, with proceeds from the sale of the plates going to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Foundation.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Foundation (https://lvmpdfoundation.org/) was founded in 1999 and is involved in running programs devoted to keeping their community safer. Contrary to DeCastro’s allegations that the plates support an all-powerful police state out to oppress those opposed to the police, the Foundation’s biggest campaign featured on their web site is devoted to providing Easter baskets for children in Southern Nevada.
Also contrary to DeCastro’s claims, the charitable license plates are available to anyone living in Nevada who needs a license plate for their vehicle. After an initial fee of $61 and a yearly renewal fee of $30 ($96 initial fee and a $50 renewal fee for personalized plates), any motorist can display the charitable tags on their vehicles. They do not serve as a “get out of ticket free” device, motorists can and still be ticketed for violating traffic laws while displaying the license plates.
Other personalized tags offered by the State of Nevada (https://dmv.nv.gov/platescharitable.htm) go towards causes intended to promote such causes as Breast Cancer Awareness, wildlife conservation, the Hoover Dam and the charities run by the Las Vegas Raiders.
