Activist for the homeless Regan Benson mocked on Tuesday the continuing efforts of the Colorado Attorney Regulation Council to prosecute her for a 2023 incident in Englewood, Colorado, where she allegedly practiced law without a license.
Benson Investigated by Colorado Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee
The charges were brought by former Englewood City Attorney Ian Griffin after a March 30, 2023, incident in which Benson ordered a homeless woman not to take a plea deal while the woman was talking with Griffin.
An outraged Benson turned an admonishment by Griffin into a screaming match in which Allied security guards became involved. Shannon would later reject the plea deal at a hearing and Griffin would file a complaint with the Attorney Regulation Council.
13 months later, Benson claimed that the investigation into her actions continued with the Council, suggesting that they had just offered her an option to admit her guilt which would then be kept confidential without punishment.
Benson asserted that she would not take the deal, if still offered after exposing its “confidential” nature and mocked the council. She claimed the worst she would get was an injunction from the Governor’s office to stop giving legal advice to her homeless clients.
Eventually returning her attention to Robert, the formerly homeless man she’s been helping since he had his foot partially amputated early in the year who was sitting beside her in her car, Benson said that they were waiting for approval for a spot in Denver’s Long Term Housing program.
Robert is currently living at the Stout Street Recuperative Care Clinic in Denver. Benson was visiting on Tuesday to take him out to do some light shopping. Robert is still using a knee scooter to get around with but is expected to receive a prosthetic shoe soon to help him regain the ability to walk on his own.
Benson updated Robert’s legal fight in Englewood, claiming that he had a public defender and had been granted the ability to attend hearings via zoom calls. He has been charged with two counts of public urination.
