Regan Benson protested a non-denial of service in the Englewood Civic Center’s public library on Monday with a protest outside the library on Wednesday.
The advocate for the homeless filmed a confrontation she described as a “rogue” Allied Security worker on Monday who asked her to follow library policy and sign in before being issued a key to use the library bathroom. She refused to do so and when she returned, the worker informed her that she may be banned in the future from using the bathroom.
Benson raised an issue with the library policy and the worker’s supervisor became involved, telling the worker to take a break while Benson told the worker to quit his job repeatedly. When the worker left the area, Benson followed him with her camera, taunting the man to quit his job before going silent and following the man outside as he smoked a cigarette.
On Wednesday, Benson returned to the library to protest the policy again. She was able to repeatedly use the bathroom on her livestream without protest from Alex, a long time Allied Security guard, and eventually gave up on her internal protest to carry the protest outside.
Benson spent 40 minutes outside the lower entrance to the Civic Center engaging members of the public and informing them that they did not have to sign in to use the public facilities. Benson became confrontational with a library worker who was attempting to enter the building and ended up throwing Benson’s flyer in the trash, but otherwise spent an event free period providing “education” to the public.
The YouTuber was surprised by a friendly face during her protest as Steve “Cowboy” Olson’s daughter Destiny stopped by with her partner and her daughter. The pair exchanged greetings for several minutes before Destiny left to use the building’s resources.
Benson eventually ended her protest to attend hearings involving homeless members of the community and bringing her live stream to an end.
Englewood’s bathrooms were shut down for renovation and decontamination in 2023 along with a large portion of the library after high concentrations of methamphetamine contamination were found within the facilities. The library apparently recently put in place the optional policy to sign in in order to get a keycard to use the bathrooms.
Benson, who has a condition where her body produces excessive amounts of kidney stones, has been fighting Englewood over bathroom access since 2022 when she was denied use of the third-floor employee bathrooms during an audit of the building.
Her repeated run-ins with members of the Allied Security force led to firings and reassignment of multiple security guards. It is unclear if the security officer Benson encountered on Monday will be disciplined for his actions.
