Attorney Michael Ehline visited jailed YouTuber Jose “Chille” DeCastro at the Clark County Detention Center in Nevada on Monday, hours before DeCastro issued a statement to his fans through YouTuber Brian “Here’s the Deal” Young.
Ehline expressed surprise at the detention center’s policy that only allows attorneys with Nevada bar cards to meet in person with their clients as he indicated that he represented DeCastro in cases in California and Texas. Denied an in-person meeting by prison officials, he was able to meet with his client via a video conferencing kiosk.
Ehline described DeCastro as looking gaunt and tired as the men spoke but claimed that DeCastro was strong from the ordeal and had no tears to shed. He admired his client’s fearlessness as DeCastro faced his present fate within the Las Vegas jail.
DeCastro complained about the water, asking Ehline to bring him “purified water” as he described the water available in his cell of tasting of urine. Then DeCastro told Ehline that it was pointless to visit because only someone with a Nevada bar card would be allowed to see him in person and provide him with physical contact.
The attorney announced that DeCastro had given him permission to produce a “Free Chille” t-shirt as an opportunity to raise funds for DeCastro’s legal defense. Ehline floated the idea of having DeCastro’s fans submit designs for the t-shirts with the best being used in the final product.
Ehline was later joined by YouTuber Brian “Here’s the Deal” Young, who took turns with Ehline in bashing both Judge Ann Zimmerman, who heard DeCastro’s case and Michael Mee, DeCastro’s apparent former lawyer. The pair bashed Mee as incompetent and appeared to be setting grounds for an appeal based on insufficient legal defense and judicial bias.
Young then directed fans of DeCastro over to DeCastro’s YouTube channel, where Young started a live connection-plagued fundraiser for DeCastro that eventually had to be hosted on Young’s personal channel.
After over an hour of internet connection errors, Young would eventually play an extended statement from DeCastro to his fans, detailing his first few days in prison including meeting his initial cell mate and coming to terms with sharing space with another man defecating in his general vicinity.
In his statement, DeCastro claimed that he was starving himself as he was still uncomfortable using the bathroom in front of others. He complained about the lack of clocks within the facility and lack of computer screens to provide educational opportunities.
DeCastro’s fans have contributed nearly $22,000.00 since Sunday, split between two GoFundMe accounts. The YouTuber has claimed that he needs $25,000.00 to retain an attorney for the appeals process.
