Activist for the homeless Regan Benson released another one in her series of what some describe as judicial love letters to Englewood, Colorado, Judge Joe Jefferson on Saturday, with a new video featuring footage from Jefferson’s court room.
Benson has made municipal court Judge Jefferson the on-going subject of her “affections” earlier in the year as she began to attend Jefferson’s near daily court hearings. The YouTuber’s interest in Jackson was sparked as Jefferson, Englewood’s only elected municipal Judge, handles cases involving clients of Benson’s services.
The YouTuber runs her Helping Hands for Dignity Coalition, a non-profit organization devoted to homeless outreach in the Denver area. Benson’s organization has been criticized as it eligible to provide community service work to those who are sentenced in the Denver’s court system and has a vested interest in seeing individuals sentenced to community service rather than jailtime.
Benson’s organization’s community service assignments have come under increased scrutiny as she has previously indicated that those in her program have been sent to work on projects that advance Benson’s personal and political views, rather than the needs of the organization.
This includes her statements that she sent good friend Aurora Transparency to document city meetings that she could not personally attend or have others in the program speak in support of Benson’s agenda at public meetings in the Denver area.
Benson herself has been advocating for a raise for Judge Jefferson since discovering that Jefferson was not scheduled to receive a raise in 2024. The advocate has been criticized for her increased scrutiny of those involved in the decision not to give Jefferson a pay raise, including Englewood City Manager Shawn Lewis.
Saturday’s footage involved a homeless man who had previously been arrested for an outstanding warrant on a day when Benson was visiting the Englewood Civic Center. Jefferson gave the man a 20-day suspended sentence along with a $150 suspended fine. He gave the man the ability to pay the $80 in court costs through doing four hours of community service, which the man opted to do at a local soup kitchen.
Benson was the only member of the public in attendance at the hearing.
