As YouTuber and activist SeanPaul “Long Island Audit” Reyes (LIA) achieved a temporary victory over the New York City Police Department on Friday in his federal civil rights lawsuit, he has refused to comply with a request to show identification as he resumes auditing on Sunday.
LIA became the most powerful auditor in New York City on Friday as the Appeals Court for the Second Circuit essentially granted him the sole right to record within the public areas of NYPD facilities as the court continued deliberations on lifting a stay on a temporary injunction that would ban the policy of trespassing citizens who attempted to film within police precincts.
Judge Jessica G.L. Clarke ordered LIA on Saturday to respond to a request by the NYPD to present his identification when attempting to conduct an audit at an unspecified NYPD facility on Sunday. LIA responded to the Judge’s orders by replying that he would not identify himself with a government issued identification card but would rather identify himself by showing police officers copies of his YouTube videos.
LIA, through attorney Andrew Case of LatinoJustice PRLDEF, had previously agreed to a 48-hour delay before he resumed auditing of New York City Police precincts in order to give the police an opportunity to notify officers of the ruling.
The 48-hour period ends at approximately 12:40PM Eastern time on Sunday afternoon when LIA is expected to conduct his first live stream since the ruling.
LIA had previously been arrested for trespassing at NYPD facilities multiple times during 2023 for violating the police no filming policy. He filed suit against the NYPD after claiming that the policy that prevents filming in NYPD facilities is in violation of New York City and New York State’s individual “Right to Record” laws.
There has been no response by lawyers for the NYPD as of press time and it is unclear how the NYPD will handle LIA’s random audit on Sunday.
